I attended the WOMEN’s HEALTH CONCERN 33rd ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM on WOMEN’s
HEALTH in London last week.
This is an authoritative meeting sharing facts on HRT with doctors.
What stood out for me was the clear improvement HRT delivers in reducing cardiovascular disease progression. We know that cardiovascular disease affects men and women similarly, and heart disease is a major issue for women.
If women start HRT before the age of 60, clear benefits in risk reduction of CHD has been shown.
These benefits have not been shown if women start HRT after the age of 60, however, no negative impact has been shown either.
We have to remember that having diabetes in pregnancy, having a positive family history of heart disease and raised cholesterol, having PCOS, being insulin resistant, to name a few, puts women at higher risk for developing cardiovascular disease later in life.
Women are being put on HRT even after having heart attacks now, which is important to
remember. However, starting HRT at a later age is somewhat in the news now, and yes, it is
absolutely possible to do, but starting at a lower dose of HRT, specifically oestrogen, and building up from there, is the safest way.
An interesting little point, was also that taking a low dose aspiring daily, has been shown to
specifically be beneficial for women, so please consider taking this.
